Camino albergues and booking: plan your overnight stops

Finding an albergue on a map gives you a place to investigate. You still need to know whether it suits you, whether it takes bookings and what has actually been confirmed for your date.
What is an albergue?
An albergue is a hostel. You will see public and private albergues as well as pensions, guesthouses and hotels. The label alone does not tell you whether you will share a room, whether you can book or when you need to arrive. Check the individual property's terms.
Galicia's official public hostel directory is one place to find properties and contacts. A directory entry is not a live count of the beds left tonight.
Four different answers to the question “Can I stay?”
- Open
- The property is operating on the stated date. It may still be full.
- Published capacity
- The number of beds it has, not the number still available.
- Bookings accepted
- You can request a reservation. Until you receive a reply, do not assume a bed is yours.
- Reservation confirmed
- You have confirmation for the people, date and property you need. Keep the terms too.
What to ask before booking
Start with the date, number of people, type of room and arrival time. Ask about the total price, cancellation terms, bedding and anything else you need. If an entrance or bathroom needs to work for you, ask for the particular measurements or details that matter.
Check the date on the confirmation and save a contact number. If a property does not take reservations, write down an alternative and keep that night marked as unbooked.
A message you can adapt
Hello, we are [number] people walking the Camino. Do you have space for the night of [date]? We would like [room type] and expect to arrive around [time]. What is the total price, and what bedding do we need to bring? How do we confirm a booking, and what are the cancellation terms? Thank you.
Spanish version to send
Hola, somos [número] personas y estamos haciendo el Camino. ¿Tenéis sitio para la noche del [fecha]? Buscamos [tipo de habitación] y llegaríamos sobre las [hora]. ¿Cuál es el precio total y qué ropa de cama necesitamos llevar? ¿Cómo se confirma la reserva y cuáles son las condiciones de cancelación? Gracias.

Keep your itinerary and bookings separate
Booking ahead means paying attention to cancellation terms. Leaving decisions until the day means more to arrange when you arrive. Choose what you are comfortable leaving open and which nights you want to settle before leaving.
If you move an overnight stop, check both the booking and the following day's walk. Changing your plan does not change a reservation. Use the stage planning guide to keep track, then check your packing list against what each property provides.
