Camino packing list: what to take on your first walk
By Hito · Published 6 September 2026
A bag fills quickly with things you might need. Before buying anything, think about where you will sleep, how you will wash clothes and what you need to keep with you during the day.
Start with the things you will use every day
Try the footwear, clothing and backpack you plan to take before the trip. Discovering that something rubs or does not fit on your first day leaves little room to adjust. Galicia's preparation guidance recommends getting used to your equipment beforehand and preparing for your own circumstances.
Pack at home, carry the bag for a while, then empty it again. Look for duplicates. Something that does two jobs might replace another item; something you cannot imagine using deserves a second look.
Ask about bedding before choosing a sleeping bag
A shared dormitory and a private room with bedding included call for different packing decisions. Ask your accommodation whether you need a sleeping bag or liner, whether towels are provided and whether you can wash or dry clothes.
Earplugs and footwear for the evening may be useful, but a packing list is not a shopping order. Only bring what makes sense for your trip.
If your luggage is being transferred
Separate what you hand over from what you will carry yourself. Think about water, documents, your phone, weather protection and personal essentials. Check collection and delivery arrangements with the operator. An accommodation booking does not necessarily include a luggage service.
This is a starting list, not a target weight for everyone. Personal health needs and medication require your own arrangements.

One last check before you close the bag
Look up the forecast along your route, not only in Santiago. Save your bookings and useful phone numbers. If you are relying on a phone map, open it with both Wi-Fi and mobile data switched off before you leave.
Our offline map checklist walks through that test. If you have not settled your overnight stops yet, read the albergue and booking guide: what the accommodation provides will affect your bag.
