Camino de Santiago offline maps: what to download

Download what you need before leaving, then open it with Wi-Fi and mobile data switched off. Having a Camino app installed does not mean its maps, your stages or your bookings are stored on the phone.

Check what “offline” includes

An app may store a route line without the background map, or let you read a stage without opening an accommodation listing. Check the exact screens you will need. A feature description in an app store does not tell you which downloads you have already completed.

Some information also needs a recent check. A stored map does not confirm current diversions, opening hours or available beds. Separate information you can prepare from information that must be checked again closer to the day.

Download these before your Camino

• Route and maps: your chosen section, including the variant you intend to follow.
• Stage notes: starting towns, overnight stops and any personal notes.
• Bookings: each confirmation, address and cancellation conditions.
• Contacts: phone numbers saved directly to your contacts rather than only in a web page.
• Travel: tickets and documents in a format accepted by your transport provider.
• Access details: check what remains readable if an app asks you to sign in again.

If you are visiting from another country, keep transport details and accommodation addresses in the form used locally. A saved Spanish or Portuguese place name can be easier to match to a sign or ticket than a translated name. Keep any translated explanation alongside it.

Run an airplane-mode test

Finish downloading over a reliable connection. Switch on airplane mode and check that Wi-Fi has not remained enabled. Close the app, reopen it and work through a typical day.

1. Open a stage map and zoom in to the level of detail you need.
2. Find the starting and finishing towns and check that the route stays visible.
3. Open your notes and one saved booking.
4. Try the accommodation and service information you expect to use.
5. List what is missing, reconnect and fix it before leaving.

Repeat the check if you change routes, reinstall the app or remove downloads to free up space. Testing a single screen once is not a guarantee that everything will work later.

Location, maps and mobile data are different

A phone being able to determine its location does not mean the chosen app has a map ready to display. Behaviour also depends on the device, permissions and downloaded content. Test your own phone with the actual app you plan to carry.

Mobile service abroad depends on your provider and plan. Check the provider's terms for the countries you will visit before relying on mobile data. Offline preparation remains useful even when you expect to have a connection.

Keep files somewhere you can find them

A document listed in cloud storage may still need to download when you open it. Save the files locally and test them. Protect your phone and keep personal documents separate from material you intend to share.

Prepare the next stage before leaving your overnight stop. If a new download fails, keep your previous usable copy until the replacement works. A short checklist repeated each evening can help you notice missing information.
