French Way from Sarria

Sarria to Santiago itinerary: 5, 6 or 7 walking days

Sarria is one possible start for a section of the French Way ending in Santiago. The next question is how much time to allow. These examples show what changes when you add another walking day.

How far is Sarria from Santiago on the Camino?

The Xunta stage figures used here add up to 114.8 km. That lets you compare the itineraries; it is not a door-to-door measurement between your accommodation. Your starting point, detours and overnight choices may change the distance you walk.

Official pages use Arca (O Pino) for the O Pedrouzo stop. Seeing both names in your research does not mean you need two separate overnight stays.

Five days: check the longer day first

In this example, Palas de Rei–Arzúa is 29.1 km. Look at that day before deciding whether five days works for you. Dividing the total by five does not tell you where you can stay or what the terrain is like.

Six days: stay in Melide

A night in Melide splits the longer day into 14.6 km and 14.5 km. It also adds a night to arrange. Portomarín–Palas de Rei remains a 25.1 km day, so check each stage rather than relying on an average.

Seven days: change the first stops too

This example stays in Ferreiros and Gonzar before reaching Palas de Rei. You pass through Portomarín without spending the night. No day in the example exceeds 20.2 km, but distance alone does not make a walk easy.

Are these short stages?

They are shorter in kilometres than some of the five-day stages. Read the route descriptions too. For instance, the Xunta describes a climb after the A Áspera bridge near Sarria and a later descent towards the Miño.

What to arrange before booking

Allow separate days for getting to Sarria and returning from Santiago. Check transport for your actual dates, where it drops you and how you will reach your accommodation. Then arrange the nights you want to book. Our albergue guide includes questions and a Spanish message you can adapt.

If you want to request a Compostela, read the current requirements. Choosing Sarria as your start does not replace the conditions about your route and stamps.

How we counted the kilometres

We use the full-stage distances in the six official pages below. Arca–Santiago publishes 20.2 km, although its smaller sections add up to 20.3 km. We kept the full-stage figure; we have not measured that difference on the ground.
