Tui to Santiago itinerary: stages and independent planning

Starting in Tui puts you on the inland Portuguese Way as it enters Galicia. That distinction matters: it is a different trip from starting in Porto, and a different approach from following the coast.

Which route are you choosing?

The reference sequence passes through O Porriño, Redondela, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padrón before Santiago. Those names give you a starting point for arranging your nights. You do not have to finish every day at a published stage end.

The official arrival description refers to the international bridge between Valença and Tui. If you begin elsewhere in town, you will not walk exactly the distance listed for that stage.

A six-stage reference itinerary

These are the Xunta's published stages. Together they add up to 119.6 km. Use them as a reference without combining figures from different route versions or starting points.

The final stage is the longest in this example. If it does not suit you, research an intermediate stop with accommodation or allow more time. Shortening one day means checking what remains for the next.

Do six stages make a one-week trip?

Not necessarily. Add your journey to Tui, the return journey and any time you want in Santiago. A late arrival may mean staying overnight before you start walking. Check the transport timetable before committing to your first night.

Tui or the Coastal Way?

The Coastal Way enters Galicia through A Guarda and passes Oia, Baiona and Vigo before joining the inland route in Redondela. Starting in Tui does not include that coastal section. Our Portuguese Coastal Camino guide explains the choice.

Neither option is best for everyone. Compare your time, journey to the start and the kind of walk you want. If the route names are still unfamiliar, begin with the first Camino guide.

What to settle before leaving

Check where you will stay, how a booking is confirmed and when the property expects you to arrive. Save contacts and have an alternative if you change your plans. Ask the operator about dates and coverage if you want luggage transfers.
