Portuguese Coastal Camino: the route and your starting point

The name can suggest a whole trip beside the sea. Look at the route before choosing it: there are coastal stretches, towns and urban sections, and you still need to decide where to start.

Start by naming your starting point

Write down the starting town when comparing Coastal Camino itineraries. One beginning in Porto covers a different journey from one beginning in A Guarda. This guide explains the entry into Galicia and the section covered by the official Xunta sources below.

If you are arriving from Portugal, check how you will cross to A Guarda separately. Do not build a connection around an old boat timetable or someone else's memory of the service.

Where it goes in Galicia

The coastal approach passes through A Guarda, Oia, Baiona and Vigo. It joins the inland Portuguese Way at Redondela. From there, treating them as two completely separate routes to Santiago is misleading.

Coastal does not mean a continuous beach walk

The Xunta describes the shore on A Guarda–Oia, but also the climb towards Baredo on Oia–Baiona and the urban approach into Vigo. Read those differences before choosing a route from a photograph.

If time near the sea appeals to you, this is a section to investigate. If your aim is to avoid paved surfaces, hills or cities, check the individual stages: the route name cannot answer those questions.

How much time to allow

Choose the start and finish, then divide the walking days. The published Baiona–Vigo stage is longer than A Guarda–Oia, so do not assume an even daily distance. Research somewhere to stay if you need to split a day.
